County - Dare Built - 1872 Operational - Yes Height - 150 Feet Signal Visible - 19 miles After one year, the original Bodie Island Lighthouse it was discovered that one side was one foot lower than the other. After attempts to prop up the lighthouse failed, a new 90 foot high brick tower was built in 1859. At the beginning of the Civil War the lighthouse was controlled by the Union, but in 1861 the Conferedacy blew it up. The current lighthouse was modeled after the Cape Lookout Lighthouse with a few execptions and began operation in 1872. |
