ADMS Food Drive

Under the direction of the school counselor, Yvonne Lewis, students at Acme Delco Middle school partnered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC for a food drive in late November and early December. They serve 34 counties, Columbus County being one of those. They told the students that 8000 children go hungry on a regular basis in the county. The students collected 1667 pounds of food which was enough to feed 1400 people. The Builders Club and their sponsor Mrs. Mary Corbett collected food one Saturday morning in December at the Piggy Wiggly in Riegelwood which helped boost their totals. Collecting all the food  gave to our students an awareness of the great feeling a person can obtain by giving to others. It is a quality that needs to be fostered-that feeling of empathy. The ADMS Builder's Club spent an enjoyable Saturday at the local Piggly Wiggly store to raise food for the Eastern Food Bank of North Carolina. The outpouring of support from the community was staggering as the club raised more than 800 dollars worth of food items for the admirable organization. Furthermore, students and faculty were stunned when one gentleman spontaneously contributed 100 dollars for the students to put towards a food purchase. The students were found to be in high spirits as they sang Christmas carols, drank hot chocolate and ate donuts while seeking contributions from the community.

The pictures below demonstrate the students’ culminating experience of their lessons surrounding the traditional celebrations of Thanksgiving.  The students read books and had writing projects surrounding the holiday.  They created handmade pottery as well as other art projects.  They completed their learning with a Thanksgiving feast including a paper bag turkey stuffed with popcorn.
