At TCS, Ms. Tart’s 6th Grade math students put their area skills to the test today in a “Matho” (math version of Bingo) competition today. The students were asked to look at the picture of a polygon and calculate the area. The interactive word wall was key for students who needed a reminder of the formulas and a multiplication chart was provided for students who needed fact reinforcement. Brook and Sophia reign supreme in the end! Winners took home a Walmart gift card ☺️

At TCS, Ms. Williamson’s 8th grade ELA class worked together to answer text dependent question after annotating the text, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. Students were tasked to work together to get each answer correct before moving on. Groups that got each answer correctly, were able to put their group number into a lottery square for the final drawing to win a prize. Students used various strategies to work together while working in a timely manner to beat the clock!

Due to ongoing flooding and the potential for hazardous travel conditions, Columbus County Schools will conduct Remote Instruction on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024. This applies to both students and staff. Schools will provide additional details regarding assignments and remote learning procedures. Students will be allowed to make up work missed during Remote Instruction. All extracurricular activities are canceled. We understand that closing schools for in-person instruction is disruptive and that students benefit most from being in the classroom. However, the safety of our students, parents, and staff is our highest priority. Based on current reports and observed conditions, traveling to and from our campuses could be dangerous tomorrow, particularly in the areas hardest hit by the flooding. We aim to resume in-person instruction on Wednesday, September 18th, provided conditions improve. We will keep you informed of any updates to this plan.

This past Friday at TCS, fourth grade students performed their Candy Rock Cycle activity in Science class. Students used Starburst candy to make sediment and squished the pieces together to make sedimentary rock. Students then applied heat and pressure to their sedimentary rock to form a metamorphic rock. Finally, students heated their metamorphic rock until it melted, forming magma. Once their magma cooled into a solid, they were left with an igneous rock. Students then could start the whole cycle over again, just like the rock cycle! 🪨🥼🔄

The 6th grade week one morning meeting focus skill was KINDNESS. The students participated in many collaboration/group activities throughout the week including things they could do to make their school better TODAY. We wrapped the week up with a game of #hashtagit to build classroom community. You’ll notice 6th grade students performing acts of kindness throughout the week. Snap a “Caught in the Act” picture of them and send them to Ms. Vereen.

Students in Ms. Williamson’s 8th grade class enjoyed a book tasting of various genres to kickoff the year. Students were tasked to get a taste of genres they typically don’t read. After recording their feedback on their menus, students were encouraged to share their interests with group members and discuss!📚
