Columbus County Health Department will be visiting Columbus County Schools to offer Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) and Meningococcal vaccines to rising 7th and 12th graders. This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive their state required vaccines. If you are interested in your child receiving these vaccines while at school, please complete the paperwork and sign the consent that will be sent home April 3rd. All forms will need to be turned in to your child’s school by April 17th. Vaccines Information Sheets will be provided. Please reach out to your child’s school nurse or the pediatric nurses at Columbus County Health Department, if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you and your child. Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is a special day dedicated to those who work in a classroom supporting students to ensure educational success. In the school sector, paraprofessional educators are also known as Behavior Support Specialists, ISS & Alternative Learning Facilitators, Teacher Assistants, and Paraeductors. These fantastic people deliver targeted support to students who may need extra help and work to maintain the classroom, keeping it running smoothly. Paraprofessionals are the unsung heroes of the education system - without their strong foundation, teachers frequently report feeling overwhelmed and overworked. Paraprofessionals help shoulder the workload and allow teachers to focus on what they do best - teach! Paraprofessional Appreciation Day seeks to bring these professionals to the forefront and show them a little extra love for all the incredible work they do, day in and day out.

Good Evening Mustangs, This is Shelly Cullipher, Principal of Nakina Middle School with events and reminders for this week. Congratulations to our Mustangs that participated in Celebrated the Arts! Their talent was on display during the art show and chorus presentation! We would also like to thank their teachers, families, and community members for their support! Monday, March 24: -8th grade students will visit SCHS from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25: -8th grade students will take the NC Earth Science Check-In. -Our baseball and softball teams will play Tabor City Middle @ 4:00 p.m. at the complex. Wednesday, March 26th: -Agri-Science students will travel to WCHS to learn more about animal husbandry. Thursday, March 27th: -Our baseball and softball teams will play Tarheel at home @ 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 28th: -The 3rd grading period will end. -PBIS (snack store only, no Kona Ice) Reminders: -Remember to purchase your yearbook before April 15th for $40.00! Return all forms with cash or check (made payable to Nakina Middle School) to Mrs. Sellers. -Spring Dance money and permission forms are due to Mrs. Sellers by April 11th. Mustang Goals for Success: Academic Goal: By June 6, 2025 NMS will increase student proficiency by at least 3% across all subjects and grade levels from 57.7% to 59.43%. iReady is a very important diagnostic and instructional tool that is used to measure student lexile growth for reading and quantile growth for math. Students are expected to complete 45 minutes in reading and 45 minutes in math each week and they must pass 2 lessons with at least 80%. Students have plenty of opportunities to complete their iReady lessons during the school day. Attendance: As we continue to grow and learn, please remember that attendance is very important. We understand there has been a lot of sickness and students should not come to school if they are running a temperature or throwing up. Congratulations to 6th grade for achieving an average daily attendance of 97.2% and 5th grade 95.18%! We have 38 instructional days (actual days in school) remaining before we begin the End of Grade Assessments on May 23rd!! We appreciate your support and hope you have a wonderful week!

Parents should receive a data conference sheet explaining your child’s progress on iReady & NC Check Ins. Please sign and return that to your child’s teacher by Friday, March 21st and call your child’s teacher if you have questions or did not receive this sheet. Nakina Middle School 8th grade students enjoyed a day touring the UNC Pembroke campus this week.

Monday, March 10th is a Teacher/Parent Conference Day and No School for Students. We hope you will schedule a conference via phone or in person between 11:30 and 7:00 p.m.. There will be no student activities and the last day of baseball tryouts will be Tuesday, March 11th from 3-5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 11th: 8th Grade students will visit the University of NC at Pembroke Thursday, March 13: Students who signed up will visit the Columbus Career and College Academy. Friday, March 14th: The Mustang Chorus will perform at the Fayetteville Marksman Hockey in the evening. We have 46 instructional days remaining until we begin the EOG's on Mary 23rd. The Wall That Heals will be escorted downtown Whiteville on Tuesday April 22, 2025 between 1230pm and 1pm. It will be escorted by Rolling Thunder SC-3 and many other motorcycle groups. The Wall That Heals is a 3/4 replica of the Vietnam Memorial from Washington DC. It also has a mobile Education Center that will be on display at the Veterans Memorial Park of America April 24-27, 2025. This will be on display 24 hours till Sunday April 27th at 2pm. We will be having a WELCOME CEREMONY on Thursday April 24th at 6pm. And AGENT ORANGE AWARENESS CEREMONY on Friday April 25th at sunset. As The Wall That Heals is escorted through town, we would like people to be on the sidewalks welcoming it with flags, banners, etc. We are checking with the schools about the bands playing as it comes through town. The schools are out on Easter Break. So we need all the help we can get to spread the word. We need to spread the word about the In Memory Program. Deadline is March 25th for applications to be sent in. This is a program that will Honor Vietnam Veterans that came home but have passed due to their service in Vietnam. All applications sent in by March 25th will be Honored at our event and in Washington DC in June. We need 200+ volunteers, so please share this as well.

Monday, March 10th, is Parent-Teacher Conference Day for all schools except CCCA. There will be no school for students on this day to allow time for these important meetings. Conferences will be held from 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM, and you can choose a time that works best for you. Meetings can be held either in person, by phone or online, depending on your preference. Please note: CCCA will follow its regular schedule on this day.

Columbus County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, March 5th for all students and staff due to expected high winds.

March is Developmental Disabilities Month, and we invite you to join Columbus County Schools as we celebrate our first "Different Abilities Awareness Family Night". The event will take place on March 4, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm in the Media Center of Chadbourn Elementary School and is open to all parents and guardians. Organizations and agencies from across the state will be on campus to provide information on resources and services available to support individuals with disabilities and their families.
